Lascivious Lucy’s recent story Snow Day featured a vintage photograph of a woman in fencing attire holding a foil. This image has long been one of my favorites and I wonder if Lucy knows that there is an oil painting depicting this subject, painted in 1890 by Jean Béraud entitled L’Escrimeuse or The Swordswoman. It is one of three paintings he did on this subject, but in this one the woman is in the exact pose as the photograph. I have also seen this painting listed as 1908, so which came first, the painting or the photo? The woman in the photo was one of Anna Held’s Fencing Girls’. Anna was Florence Ziegfeld’s first wife, and the fencing girls appeared in the production of The Little Duchess in 1901, a Broadway musical in three acts that ran for 144 performances. The photo was taken by Gilbert & Bacon in 1902. Here is a photo of the Fencing Girls taken in 1901, I think our swordswoman is the fencer at the top.
So, I was excited to see Lucy’s story and one of my favorite images. It was a good choice, because the woman in Snow Day is a no nonsense, I expect sexy, woman completely in charge, and judging by the look the eyes of our fencing girl in the photo, so is she. I framed the two images many years ago, it hangs in my office, and always enjoy seeing my two sexy ladies. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Lucy’s story as I looked at my fencing girls and Lucy’s other vintage photos. But, she left a bit of a cliff-hanger, and I can’t wait for part two.

It’s always wonderful when images ‘grab you’ like that. One of my favourites is ‘Game On’ by Jack Vettriano. I have it hanging in my bedroom.

I can see your interest quite clearly. The question is do we have a swordswoman or a swordsman or both?

I didn’t know about the painting before you told me. I love that the image has such life – the painting, the photo, your office, my story….
As you know, I love vintage photos (especially vintage erotica). With these photos, so often there’s no context or information. I like getting to wonder about who the models were and what they would think about the pictures still being enjoyed and loved now.

Word or image if it grabs your attention that’s what matters, now if it’s both, then even better. 😉 Personally I love a good cliffhanger, it gives us something to ponder and look forward to.
