When I was fifteen years old I really wanted a record player. My dad agreed to pay me for doing chores around the house and working in his store. Before that it had been child labor, today I could have reported him, but that was the 50’s. I worked all Summer and saved my money, payday was Friday, just like a real job. When I had enough, my mom took me to the department store and I made my first big ticket purchase. I had some 45rpm records, Elvis my favorite, Hound Dog my favorite song, and now I could listen to them in my room. As Dad admired my hi-fi he suggested I take their old one upstairs and keep mine in the family room. Funny guy. The Kingston Trio came out with Tom Dooley, and it was all over the radio, and I loved that song. I swiped five bucks from my dad’s wallet and went to the drug store and bought my first LP.
The Kingston Trio was big. The next year they released a live album From the Hungry i and one of the songs was They Call the Wind Mariah. When I saw this prompt that’s what came to my mind. This was a nice reminiscence.

Oh yes — the first record player! Such a coveted purchase!
What a great memory. And too funny that your dad coveted your system! 😉
The best stereo set I ever owned, I bought at a garage sale for $25. It had a record player, dual tape deck, 5-disc CD changer, and AM/FM radio. It was probably 10 years old when I bought it, and it lasted me another ten. 🙂

It’s also a song in the movie “Paint Your Wagon”… I was planning on using this same thing along with two other references. GMTA!

HL was just given a record player for his birthday so we are reliving the experience. A great post and you have brought back some memories 😊

“They Call the Wind Mariah” brings back childhood memories for me. It was something my parents listened too, that and other songs from Paint Your Wagon, and of course us kids were ‘exposed’ to it too 🙂

I loved this Elliott, my Dad loved country and western music so I’m sure I’ve heard the song, I’ll need you-tube to help me remember it though!
Your depiction was so vivid – I could feel your pride and protectiveness over your ‘big ticket purchase’ – swiping $5 though, that’s the cheeky Elliott I know!
